Prefix be-

I had difficulty deciphering the meaning of many Dutch words that starts with the prefix "be-" but I realized recently that English is also using the same prefix. Perhaps it will help in learning more Dutch words. I'm just guessing here. I got this explanation from WikiAnswers:

"Be-" as a prefix is more complicated than most other prefixes as it has multiple definitions. Whereas the other dozen or so most commonly used prefixes can be defined with one or two words, "be-" requires much explanation.

Take out your dictionary for a full and complete listing, but here are the usages that I can hopefully help explain and example:

1) thoroughly, 2) to make or cause to seem, and 3) to provide with. I personally do not find it helpful to get bogged down by WHICH exactly fits a new word. Just relate them all to the rest of the word.

1) thoroughly Ex: A "bespeckled" egg has speckles all over it; it is "thoroughly speckled." (As I said, it makes sense to just say the egg was made speckled or was provided with speckles, doesn't it?)

2) to make or cause to seem Ex: When you "belittle" a person, you "make" that person "seem little."

3) to provide with Ex: A "beloved" person is one who has been "provided love."

Dutch has sentence homonyms

A homonym, in English, is a word with more than one meaning. An example is the word light. In Dutch, I just learned from a study that a sentence homonym also exists, and the only way to disambiguate them is by context. An example is the following sentence: de verkoopster is te lelijk om te verleiden; which could mean (1)the shopgirl is too ugly to seduce anybody, or (2)the shopgirl is too ugly for anybody to seduce.

Pronounce your Dutch properly

Our Dutch teacher told us that improper pronunciation could lead to terrible things. As an example, she cited the sentence "Ik betaald huur", which means "I paid (house) rent". If you're not precise, you may fall into the sentence "Ik betaald hoer", which means "I paid a prostitute." Haha.

Better to just speak English.

Russian alphabet

Wala lang. Natuwa lang ako dito sa Learn Russian site na ito. It's the first result in Google for "Learn Russian" search. I tried the first and second vocabulary lessons and took the corresponding quizzes. My score for Quiz 1 is 80 and for Quiz 2 40. Do you think I should continue? Hehehe.

Note: may magandang boses at magandang babae sa website na to. Siya siguro ang teacher. Hmm.
